Commission #6!
Good evening, my dears!
Yes it is that time again, when I have new artwork to share with you all, and so soon after my latest post for a pleasant change! Up this time is of course another commissioned work, this time for AtomicGreymon, who was looking for a Tron-pony crossover featuring Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash. He had some very specific factors in mind that he was hoping to see brought to life in large wallpaper-sized visual form, and I can only hope that I did his vision proper justice here (EDIT: It's come to my attention that Blogger has automatically resized the picture as apparently it's too large, but if anyone is interested the full-size 2560x1600 pixel version of the painting is available for download at My Little Wallpaper. Many thanks, SharkMachine~! <3).
I'll be the first person to admit that I had certain difficulties with this piece. The first was merely finding the time to work on it given all of my other demands and projects (steampunk Rarity was also quite time-consuming as I have said), as well as just the subject matter itself. I've said repeatedly that I don't consider myself to be especially skilled in rendering complicated inorganic objects such as building and vehicles, and this particular scene demanded just that in the form of the futuristic Tron city (which I do not know the name of if indeed it has one, as admittedly I have not seen the movie). And again, my client had many specific points I needed to take into consideration such as certain angles desired and things like that, so yes it was a worthy challenge to get to a finished product I felt 100% satisfied with.
Anyhow though, hopefully you all will enjoy it. ^.^ And as last time with steampunk Rarity, I'm happy to say that I have some concept art to share with you all in the form of suit designs and the like, so here they are! I really need to draw more Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash, and hopefully now that I'm nearly caught up with all of my commissions at last, I'll be able to do just that!
Well I do believe that is all for now. Expect one more commissioned piece again in the very near future (though admittedly, not one quite so involved as these last two), and after that hopefully some new personal artwork to follow! Until next time then, stay fabulous all. ^_~

@Kein
Good evening! I'm very glad to hear that you like the piece, and thank you so much for posting! ^.^ But, you saw the work-in-progress? I'm not quite sure what you mean by that since I didn't show it to anybody, not even my client (even though you are correct about my adding more highlights and so on, which is interesting!), but all the same I'm glad you like the end result. Thank you again for the lovely feedback; I'm especially glad you think the city turned out well considering I had some difficulty with it!
As far as deviantART goes, the reason I haven't made an account yet is that I am an extremely busy person in my non-pony life, and even keeping up with this blog in addition to creating fanart is usually a considerable challenge for me. Maintaining a deviantART account would be one more responsibility I'd have to worry about (I used to have an account before I began drawing ponies, so I remember how much time I used to put into it). Also, I'm not sure if I could manage what would potentially be the extra attention right now. As I said above in my edit however I've been considering the idea more strongly as-of-late, and might just end up doing it. Of course if I do I'll be sure to let you all know here!
Thank you again for your interest in my artwork, as well as for the kind feedback. I appreciate it!
I can't believe it. Just like steampunk Rarity, you have touched on another part of what I feel makes me who I am. This really, truly looks like something I would want to make if I could. Technology has always been my fascination, and when I brought up your blog just to check if there were any more comments since I last checked, fully expecting there not to be, I had to question if I had somehow walked into my future blog. The city in the background reminds me of another such space station city from a game that I once played. Power suit ponies? Beam wings? I didn't think that anyone would do such a thing, if not for myself. I really need to try painting. There is no other way.
Okay, how do I collect myself after this... It's hard to describe, because though I haven't watched Tron either, this is directly relevant to my general interests. If I had seen this before I had decided to start drawing, I would have said to myself, "Wow, I wish I could make things like this" before leaving to the bathroom and crying. This is even more of a dream to me than the steampunk Rarity, it's just- I-
*deep breaths*
Ahem. Apart from this great combination, I would never expect to hear (if I didn't know anything about you already) that you had a problem with inorganic objects. This is as personally striking as your commission for Jody, and I now have to question which my favorite fanart is. You have captured the darkness of space (What is hit by no light is seen as black. What is somehow hit by a light source is colored.), and you have made a pony version of a human outfit just as I would have. The glowing lit sides, the flying trails, the depth of Pinkie's tail... This is so much to take in at once. As much as you might deny it, you are undoubtedly the best Pony artist. Unquestionably. There is a lot of amazing talent in this community. You are its top. I don't even know what your client thought of it, but I'm convinced that I like it more. This image, it's so captivating. I'm at a loss for words.
Here's how deep this goes for me: Dash's expression, of all things, reminded me of something from my childhood. Specifically, a free comic series. I'm not going to get into explaining what it was, but I looked it up again for old time's sake. That led me to the artist's website (which is bigger than it sounds, because it was hosted on a large community website that I joined when I was 7 years old, and I have mentioned here before). Now, you aren't going to believe this. I'm telling you, you aren't going to believe it. Do you remember how I said that I'm a "creator", because I'm a jack of all trades, working in various other arts and even programming? I went to the website's "about" page. Just read this.
Yes. The artist is a programmer. Who calls himself a creator. And yet, in the end, he chose to be an artist. And his words, they sound just like mine. I don't even know what to say.
I can't stop looking at this art piece.
This... leaves me absolutely breathless! To go from murky brown steampunk Rarity to some cool neon Tron-esque (despite not having seen the movie either) Pinkie + Dash? Absolutely amazing. The added splash of colour is refreshing, and I love Pinkie's expression! And to just out this just as the blog goes silent was truly a surprise to all of us here!
If anything, the blue streak and orange beam wings just scream to me a certain game about flinging yourself through interdimensional doors...
And addendum: New wallpaper along with CaineScroll's Octavia piece! Yay!
wow, very well done.also, you really should get a deviant art account, then I can get notified when you have something new =P
Wow!~ The amount of time and detail spent on shading the characters alone is astounding. I can count 1..2..3..4 tones on Pinkie Pie's tongue alone (including a gradient!). Not to mention all the environmental reflective lighting and ambient occlusion.
I also think the composition is fairly nice. Sort of reminds me of a check mark across the piece with Pinkie pie at the top looking back going 'nah nah nah, nah nah naaah!'
How she got those wings is anyone's guess, but its Tron so why not?
I also particularly like the idea that their ID disc's have their cutie marks on it. ^^
Amazing work as always. :D
PS- May I have your email? I'd like to contact you about something~
Oh my goodness! I absolutely ADORE this! First steampunk ponies, and now this?! If the next piece pops up as Star Wars ponies, I swear, I'm being stalked by someone stealing my personal interests and commissioning you for artwork.
I especially love Pinkie's expression and her glowy wings! Everything about this is just fabulous! Great work once again! I look forward to seeing more :D
I'll admit: I was so inspired by Steampunk Rarity, I've been searching for a suitable fabric to make my Rarity that outfit! I have lots of bits and pieces lying around from making some steampunk inspired accessories (another one of my hobbies), so I'm looking forward to finishing the outfit. Unfortunately, I've been so busy with my recent re-enrollment in school to further my success in my job, all of my fun, crafty hobbies are on hold. It's definitely on the top of my to-do list, and I will be sure to send you pictures when it's completed!
@Anon
Hello there my dear! First off, allow me to say that I am immensely happy to hear that you like the piece so much, and to the degree that this commission rivals composing Octavia for the coveted spot of your personal favorite. While I was aware you are fond of technology of course I don't think I ever expected such a reaction! But, to learn that this picture has seemingly had such an impact on you is a wonderful thing for me, and I thank you sincerely for so enthusiastically sharing your feelings.
I'll be the first person to confess that, were this not a commissioned work, it's highly unlikely I ever would have attempted it or anything like it. Science-fiction is, for the most part, not very high on my list of interests and again the concept when presented to me was somewhat daunting. And yes, all the more for the reason that I didn't and still do not consider myself particularly adept at complex inorganic subjects. Almost every aspect of this piece was a challenge for me, and I've been working on it on-and-off (and concurrently alongside my last two commissions) for quite a while now.
Again though, I'm very glad that the end result is so successful for you. I wish I could take credit for some of the components that you liked so much but as I said in my blog post, I had very specific instructions/requests for this particular piece and few if any of the ideas were actually mine; I merely brought them to life. Thank you again though for the fabulous feedback--it really does mean a lot to me!
@zhoomcar
Thank you so much dearie, I'm glad you like the picture! ^.^ Yes, I hinted at my next project (meaning this one) in my comments on steampunk Rarity, and now you can all see what I meant when I said it was about as different as could be from that last one! Suffice to say these recent endeavors have made me push myself a little bit in directions I might not have gone otherwise, as I mentioned to Anon above.
I'm really glad you like all the lights and color in this piece because I did have a lot of fun with that, and though some people apparently feel this piece is too dark, given the setting I had to work with as well as my orders I did the best I could to play up all the effects lighting and use it as a light source on the ponies. And while I've never played Portal or can't even say I know anything about it, it does seem to be oriented in the same kind of futuristic sci-fi type of universe and so I guess it's a good comparison to make.
Thank you again for commenting!
@TomTheRock
Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it! As I said I certainly worked on this piece long enough, alongside my last few and hence the reason activity slowed on this blog for so long, but I'm happy it's finished at last and that people seem to feel it was worth it.
And ehh well, deviantART... as I said to Kein above I've thought about it and might end up doing it eventually, but if I'm being completely honest I'm rather dreading the idea of having another pony-account to manage. I really don't know if I have the time for it, nor the desire for any more exposure that will undoubtedly come with it (again, ponies are merely a fun hobby for me and as it is I have too little time to spend on them, much of which is now taken up managing this blog and commissions). But we'll see. In the meantime though, I'm quite sure that Blogger at least notifies people whenever I make a new post... I get them myself anyway.
@Sond
Why hello again! And thank you so very much for the kind comments! ^.^ I'm so glad that everyone seems to like the piece and despite the fact I don't consider the subject matter to be my forté. It's also gratifying to hear that people notice all of the minute details since of course, me being me I tend to devote an inordinate amount of time to such things but yes, it's much appreciated!
Once again, I'm afraid credit for the main composition with the "check mark" light-trail design, Pinkie Pie's expression and the cutie mark ID Disks must go to my client, AtomicGreymon, but I'm happy you feel I pulled them off nicely! And yes, in answer to your question you may certainly contact me by email if you like... my address is fabulous.gaijin@yahoo.com. Thank you again for commenting!
@Kateasaurus
Katie dear! Thank you SO very much for the lovely words; I had no idea you were also fond of futuristic Tron-ponies but again, I'm so happy to hear that you enjoy the piece! ^.^ It's definitely fabulous I've apparently touched on so many people's personal interests with this one, who ever would have guessed?
I'm glad you like many different things about this picture, whether they were my ideas or not, and I have to say that I am absolutely intrigued by that little tidbit regarding steampunk Rarity! That my fanart may have actually inspired someone to try sewing their own outfit (whether it's only for a pony-plush or not) is nothing short of thrilling to me, and indeed I hope you'll send plenty of pictures once you eventually get around to it! Oh I'm so terribly excited. I'm even interested to hear what fabric choices you have in mind, my dear. But while I very much am looking forward to seeing what you do with the idea, try not to overextend yourself too much until you're feeling better. Your health must definitely remain your top priority!
Well, this was a pleasant surprise! I don't get any notification of new posts through Blogger, so I wandered in completely unsuspecting to the future of ponies exploding across the screen.
What I think I love most about the piece is the contrast in subject matter... you have hard sci-fi rendered to an impressive level and mixed with looney cartoon ponies making priceless expressions, and somehow you've made it all work in harmony. I actually saw the most recent Tron, and while I loved the various bits of art direction, it soooo could have used a dose of Pinkie Pie to liven it up a bit. So I most definitely approve.
It is a very dark image, and my one monitor shows it poorly, but it comes across very vibrantly on the other. You've done an outstanding job of having Dash subtly lit from her suit... the underlighting shining up on the wings, the gleam from her teeth, the bright backlighting bleeding around her at the edges... such nice little details here and there. It's a beautiful shading and coloring job all around.
Your range impresses me to no end. Now I'm jealous not just of your talent, but also the fact that you're getting these things completed and posted. I've been trying to find the time to get my next pony drawing done and free time has been elusive (I have 3 different projects overlapping this week that are driving me to distraction. I've pretty much only left my computer to eat, sleep and take care of my sick pup for the last 2 weeks. Going a bit stir crazy.) In any event, this was a really pleasant distraction from the stress... I'm looking forward to the next one!
Well well! And now for something completely different! I, like you, have never seen the movie on which this piece is based, but I have gathered that it is based on a world inside a computer, and that the aesthetic is neon orange and blue lights strategically contrasting with a stark gray-black technological dystopia. Dystopia or not, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash sure seem to be having a blast!
What the others have to say about lines, shading, colors, shadows, perspective, and proportion will be more insightful than I can manage. I will say, though, that I love the style you chose for the faces (a fun contrast to the backdrop), and the action poses are wonderful (especially Pinkie Pie's, which captures her forward motion, her suspension from the orange wings, and her tongue-wagging at the viewer/camera).
I never expected to see a sci-fi work here. It's not a genre I am deeply invested in, but I'm still glad I saw this. I'm sure your client is delighted!
While I may not know much about the Sci-Fi genre in general, one thing I do know is, I really like this picture. I think my favorite part about it is the expressions, with Pinkie's ear flopping over from the speed. :P
And I don't think anyone's mentioned it already, but I just like how excited Pinkie looks in the Sketches. ^_^
And congrats on snagging the #1 spot in the Drawfriend again!
@Harwick
As long as you two never post on the same day, anything less than #1 for WhiteDiamonds would be a travesty. Should you ever post on the same day - well that's a choice I would not wish upon my worst enemy (if I had enemies).
Combining two of my favorite things: Tron: Legacy and My Little Pony. You have my respect.
Whhheeewww, this pic is mind-blowingly beautiful. Would you happen to have a link to the 2500x1600 version for download? My Little Tron wallpaper is best wallpaper.
You happen to accept donations, WhiteDiamonds?
This is gorgeous. Whatever I have to do to get a full-res copy, I will do it.
@Harwick
*squeee* Thanks to you my friend I just saw that; who ever would have imagined! Well thank you so much for letting me know; I probably would have seen it eventually but certainly not tonight or in time to (hopefully, still) thank everyone on EqD who left nice comments for me. I appreciate it.
And oh no no no you are not allowed to be jealous of me, silly dear Harwick! Not when I find myself so inspired by your own masterful artworks and personal success, I'll have you know. Truly I'm flattered by the thought, but I don't know that I ever could have painted something on par with your poker-playing ponies (which remains amongst my favorite fanarts) or least of all "One Last Parade", a piece which managed to bring many burly grown bronies to tears. And besides, I'm sure you realize it's taken me many long ages to get both this piece and steampunk Rarity finished to my satisfaction, hence the considerable lull in activity on my blog for the last couple months. I am no wizard by any means.
Ooooooh you know what I just thought of? One of these days, when and if we both have the time (though of course, the project would have to be allowed to stretch on for months if need be) we should absolutely try doing a collaboration art project! ^.^ Wouldn't that be so much fun? I don't know what we'd make, or how we could even work it out but yes, something tells me it would be a blast to work with you, heehee~! It is a silly thought I will admit, but a thought nonetheless!
Anyhow yes, regarding the artwork I will agree with you that the piece is overall very dark, and as I said in my comments above this is something that has already been addressed to me as a detraction (not by my client or anyone here however). I did my best to make sure it wasn't so dark that it could not be seen properly by viewing it on my two computers, but I'll apologize if it remains an issue for you. AtomicGreymon wanted this piece primarily to serve as a high-resolution desktop wallpaper I do believe, and with that in mind I figured the high contrast would probably work well enough. In any case, I appreciate that and all the other generous feedback; coming from you it always means a great deal you know!
On a more personal note, I'm sorry to hear that work and projects have been demanding all of your attention recently... certainly I know how that goes. I also hope that your dear puppy is doing okay; I'll be sure to think happy thoughts for you both!
@ponydoraprancypants
Good evening, most esteemed friend! I'll admit that, given the subject matter of this particular piece I didn't think I should expect any commentary from you, but it's a pleasant surprise to find that I was mistaken! Thank you so much for the generous compliments as always!
Like you, I would not say that most science fiction works are of particular interest to me, and as I said in my opening post I've not seen the recent remake of Tron nor entirely understand what it was about. You have gathered or deduced about as much as I have. However, that having been said I did do my best to saturate myself in visual material from the movie and other related media I could find to try and build up a proper mindset for working on this piece, as I wanted to do my client's vision justice, and I'm very happy to hear that you feel I was successful. And yes, thankfully he seemed to be pleased as well, which is always a huge relief. ^_^
Thank you for the compliments you have offered regarding the artwork itself. Technical feedback is not really necessary, and indeed the simple fact that you like the picture at all means quite enough to me. I find it interesting that you bring up 'the style for the faces in contrast to the background' because that actually was one of my last decisions to make, and one that I ended up involving AtomicGreymon in because I wasn't sure what look he preferred. But yes, I'm glad that you approve of that final decision as well!
Thank you so much once again for all of the fabulous support and commentary. It means a great deal to me!
@BND
Thank you so much my dear! I always do appreciate your sweet comments. ^.^ I'm happy that you enjoy the finished product and despite the fact that you're not overly familiar with sci-fi either, and most especially for the fact that you like the expressions. Pinkie Pie's in particular, because I can confess some of the most trouble I had with this piece (other than that dreaded city) was getting her to look just right. I knew what expression my client wanted her to have but getting it to work properly was strangely not an easy matter... oh and yes, that ear flop due to the sheer speeds was another last-minute addition and I found it funny when I thought of it.
I'm also happy that you enjoyed the sketches, since in general I have a good time playing around with such things. And yes, as I said in my original post it was also nice to have a chance to draw Pinkie and Rainbow again, and I'm only hoping I can do something nice with the two of them now that my commission queue has been somewhat relieved!
When I first saw this on the Drawfriend cover, I had absolutely no idea that it was you. I came to this blog as a part of my daily routine, just to check up on it...and then this came into my field of vision. My knowledge of the Tron world is very limited (save for Kingdom Hearts), but I have to say you did quite a good job here. I especially loved the lighting of the picture itself, an aspect I've been struggling to deal with for some time now (COUGH 17 years COUGH). Congrats~!
I'm afraid to report that I'm feeling the old depression coming back on, it's pretty much inevitable in my case. I even considered closing commissions for a while before my friends convinced me to keep them open. But maybe that's not a bad thing...I recently discovered that I make my best work whenever I'm in a wrecked state. I think all those piled-up negative emotions are strong enough to be converted into deep, soulful art, which is much better compared to punching a wall. Listening to Chopin also helps at some point (which I'm doing right now).
As a side note, I'm paying a little more attention to my dA account, i.e, I've uploaded art there that I don't think I'll ever do on Blogger. It seems to be an effective move to some degree, though the reception is still dark as ever. However, I'm not going to try and promote myself as I did, I find that it usually backfires on me...
All misery aside, congratulations once again on a job well done, and I'm sure I'll be seeing more commissioned works again soon. Very sure.
@Blue Ace
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a comment! I'm so happy that you like the piece, though I'm afraid credit for the idea must go to the person who commissioned it, AtomicGreymon. All the same it's very much appreciated, and I suppose I really should make a point to see Tron someday. Even though science fictions themes aren't usually my favorite, I can say I find the film's aesthetics to be quite fascinating!
@Fire Brony
Thank you so much, I'm so glad to hear that you like it! And while I do have the image in a 2560x1600 size as I said, I'm afraid I don't have it uploaded anywhere that I could link to (nor do I currently possess an account at any such place that will not simply shrink it down as well). This is why I was mentioning that I probably should give in an make a deviantART page, but in the meantime if you like you could drop me an email and I could send the picture directly to you. I'm afraid I don't really know what else to do, but if you have any other suggestions for image-sharing sites with some privacy restrictions I can consider uploading it there, as well!
@TapeDiggity
Well good evening my classy friend, I haven't seen you around in a while! ^.^ And donations, dear? I'll confess I don't know what might prompt you to ask such a question, but no, at least I have never done such a thing before. Nor do I know if I'd feel comfortable doing so, since I don't know what I've done to deserve it! Do you mind my asking what would inspire such a thing? ^_^
@RBDash47
Good evening, and thank you so much for the kind words, I'm so glad that you like the picture! ^.^ And well, procuring a full-resolution copy is not anything that will be too painful I can assure you... if you like you can email me and I can send it to you, or alternatively as I said to Fire Brony above if you can recommend a good image-sharing site that has at least some privacy restrictions on galleries I wouldn't mind putting it up there for everyone, either. I'm afraid I don't have an account for any suitable place already so I'm kind of at a loss at how to make it more convenient for everyone.
If you'd like to email me for it though you can do so at fabulous.gaijin@yahoo.com, and I'll be sure to send it as soon as I can. Thank you again for the interest!
@CaineScroll
Dearest! Not depression again, we were just starting to get you feeling better! You poor sweet thing you, it really is too bad that I can't hug you through my computer screen, because I would if I could you know!
I'm very sorry to hear that you have not been feeling your best again dear. I know, I really do as I have been there myself, how difficult it can be too pull oneself out of such a funk after it initially sets in. If this is in regards to commissions I can only echo what I've said to you before, but knowing how that probably will not change much I'll instead encourage you to focus on the work that you have scored already, as well as the support you've received from your friends. You said you had two commissions already in the pipeline not too long ago, didn't you? Or at least I thought that's what I'd remembered reading.
Regarding deviantART I'm afraid that I haven't checked your page in a very long time, but I'll have to make an effort to do so soon (not tonight I fear because I really am nearing the point of exhaustion, which indeed I thought I'd already reached when I got home from work two hours ago). But soon. Also thank you for the very kind words regarding my artwork (honestly, looking back on this picture I'm somewhat amazed that I created it too, seeing as how it's so outside the realm of my typical work), and just don't give up when it comes to lighting and all of that dear... I know I certainly didn't learn it in a day and still have a ways to go if you ask me.
Oh yes, and I will agree that Chopin is highly therapeutic. Minute Waltz in particular is a favorite of mine, and never ceases to fill my mind with visions of kittens tumbling over one another and waddling around on the carpet, for whatever reason. Thank Goddess for music (ideally coupled with a glass of Bailey's in this instance); it really does have the power to sooth the savage soul.
Whoa, that is one cool picture.
Initially I didn't think I had a "Blogger" account, which is why I said WhiteDiamonds should use my deviantArt username when mentioning me in this post...
But apparently Blogger accounts are just Google accounts, lol, and I do have one of those (though the reason why escapes me, as I've never really used it). After changing this account's posting name to match deviantArt, I thought I'd post my thoughts here and assure Anon that I am indeed very happy with how this commission turned out.
The finished piece exceeded my expectations in pretty much every arena; and my expectations were already very high, as WD is one of my favourite artists in the pony community. After this piece, I don't think I'd hesitate to say my #1 favourite.
I don't follow many individual art blogs, as I'm usually too busy to bookmark and check a large number of sites (one reason I prefer deviantArt, even if it doesn't have quite everything), but I've followed WD's since I first found it after seeing one of her earlier pieces posted somewhere else on the Internet. That was another with both Rainbow and Pinkie, I believe, which was just too cute to resist investigating the source. Those two are my favourites, and they always tend to be involved somehow in the few commissions I've had done since entering this fandom.
I've often wished I had more artistic talent. However, as I most certainly do not, lol, I consider myself very fortunate to have had the help of someone as talented as WD in bringing one of the strange images which has been floating around my head to life. As she indicated, there were a lot of specific details I brought up during our correspondence for this commission. I think it must've taken me about an hour to fully type up the e-mail which described the bulk of the scene, as I kept thinking of new details or (hopefully) better ways in which to describe something.
I honestly wasn't sure what kind of reaction this piece would get, as when I was first organizing my ideas about it even I thought it a rather strange idea. But I'm quite happy to see that so many people like it, and for so many different reasons; whether as a fan of both TRON and MLP, someone who has technophile sensibilities, or simply appreciators of wonderful art.
Regarding the latest TRON film, I'm in a similar boat as Harwick. I saw it a couple times in theatres on IMAX 3-D, and even own the 3-D Blu-Ray. Not so much because the story is enthralling (it was certainly entertaining if you like the genre, but definitely would have benefited from better writing), but because I really just can't get enough of the entire aesthetic of the world it takes place in. It's a strange, austere type of beauty, but it appeals to me very strongly. Ah, and the score by Daft Punk has some particularly nice cues, as well.
(cont'd)
The idea for this scene kind of evolved over time, after I came across a couple earlier MLP/TRON crossover images. But neither of those really had what I was looking for. They lacked Pinkie, for starters; and I love Pinkie too much to leave her out, lol. Rainbow is an obvious choice for a TRON crossover, but I'd think she would need somepony adept at breaking through the walls of reality in order to get on The Grid in the first place. Neither were the other pieces at all suitable for desktop use, lacking both resolution and a suitable aspect ratio. They also just didn't seem to mingle the primary identifying characteristics of each franchise in quite the way that I thought would end up looking best. There was also the question of art style. It's a common sentiment, but while I'm no artist or art critic, I do know what I like. WD's choice of style for pony art, whether it's one of her self-described "doodles" or a full digital painting, has impressed me from the first of her works I came across. Since first following her blog, I always knew that if the subject of commissions came up, I'd definitely try to get in the queue. It worked out very well that, by the time commissions and an e-mail address were mentioned in the comments section of an earlier piece, I was putting the finishing touches on this TRON crossover idea.
So after some pondering on the issue, eventually I decided to commission a definitive MLP/TRON piece. I'm eternally grateful that WD agreed to take this commission. There's not a single thing about it I'd change. It is dark, yes, but the details show up very well on my monitor, which I assume is calibrated reasonably well (though it’s no CRT); and of course the darkness and beautiful shading work help reinforce the TRON aesthetic.
As far as a possible WhiteDiamonds deviantArt account is concerned, I have to say I’m also in favour of that. It really needn’t require as much upkeep as a blog, I should think. There’d certainly be no obligation to respond to all of the comments left; but it’s a hugely convenient place to keep track of artists, and doesn’t have restrictions (or if it does, they must be so high I’ve never encountered them) on resolution. It would also allow your incredible work to reach a much wider audience of pony fans, and I’m quite sure that groups like PoniesPlus and iPonies would love to have your work included in their galleries.
@WhiteDiamonds
I believe we've already covered how you never lose the ability to be envious of another artist's talents, no matter how long you've been at it yourself, and you definitely shine in many ways that are more than worthy of my petty jealousy. I'm not quite at Solieri levels of discontent over it though, so you probably can still sleep easy knowing I'm not yet plotting your destruction as revenge against God. Give it some time, and let's see if I botch this next piece of mine first.
As for collaborating on a project, I'm all for it... I've never tried before, so I have no idea how compatible my working style might be with anyone else's, but you've produced many sketches that I would have greatly enjoyed working on. I actually have an idea for one that I was planning on doing that was inspired by your blog... I'll have to e-mail you the details. And yes... It would probably be a long process done in snips of time here or there.
I'm surviving the week, which is all I could hope to do. It was originally going to be a fairly light month for me, but suddenly multiple projects sprung out at me all demanding attention and significant progress within this week. I think I muddled through as best I could. That Pony picture though is taunting me... it's probably just a few hours away from completion, if only I could pry away for a free afternoon or evening. Maybe this weekend.
The pup also seems to be on the mend, although her appetite hasn't yet returned. I'll happily pass along your well-wishes in the form of a nice, long scratching session behind the ears. She'll like that.
Congrats again on completing another stunning work!
@WhiteDiamonds
Shucks, you didn't have to remember me, WD...I asked about donations because I figured it'd be more original (and honest) than "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY" and its derivatives. Tax season just ended, so I actually have a very small denomination of digital cash I don't need. If an artist like yourself can put it to better use (materials, bills, groceries, and whatnot), I'd be happy to send it to 'ya. I know firsthand that spontaneous gifts like that can be great morale boosts, too; I'm hoping it's like an unspoken "keep up the fantastic work", except via PayPal.
I'll be waiting for the 2560x1600 version.
@JulienBrightside
Well hello there, and thank you very much for the kind compliment! I'm glad you like the picture, though a good portion of the credit must go to my client of course, AtomicGreymon, as it was entirely his idea. ^_~ I appreciate the reply though!
@AtomicGreymon
Oh there you are dearie! Well this is definitely a pleasant surprise. ^.^ Thank you so much for posting to share your thoughts!
First off, even though I've already said it before I have to thank you most sincerely for your interest in my artwork, and of course for thinking to entrust me with your obviously well-thought out concept for a pony-TRON crossover piece. As is obvious to me, the idea was one that meant a great deal to you and so I knew I wanted to push myself in creating something that I hoped you'd be fully satisfied with. I'm so thrilled that you like the finished product, and all of your other kind words about my artwork and such are lovely and very much appreciated, I assure you. So again thank you so much.
As I said in my comments above I suppose I really need to make a point to see TRON sometime in the relatively near future, especially after putting so much effort into this, as the aesthetics of the movie really are quite fascinating. I have to thank you for introducing me to a subject matter I might not have otherwise given much thought to. And on the matter of deviantART, eeeee, peer pressure! ^^;; Though I suppose everyone is correct and it probably would be the most sensible thing for me to do, for the matter of no resolution restrictions if nothing else. Even if I am the sort of person who, for better or for worse does feel obligated to respond to every comment, I imagine I might be able to designate it more as a sort of simple image gallery/archive for people who merely desire such a thing.
Anyhow, thank you so much again my friend. It really was a pleasure working with you, and while I am only sorry I couldn't have the picture completed any sooner I'm ecstatic you're happy with it regardless. ^_^
@Harwick
*laughs out loud* Oh my goodness Harwick dear, did you just make an Amadeus reference?? That just so happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time! I don't see how you could have known that though as I don't believe I've ever mentioned it here, so I'll have to take it as a purely happy coincidence.
That having been said though no, I still fail to see what reason you would have to be "jealous" of my artworks but of course you're free to say what you like and if it makes you feel better I will say I envy you mutually. ^.~ There we are. I'm also absurdly pleased that my random, half-baked idea of a potential future art collaboration wasn't met with a chorus of laughter as I almost expected it to be, but despite the fact that I was only blurting out what popped into my head I would also be all for it whenever the two of us could find some time (and you know me, I'm not ever in any hurry so feel free to put it on the back burner until you're ready to discuss it. I shall be happy to follow your lead).
On that note though I will admit I'm entirely intrigued by the thought of an artpiece by you that was somehow inspired by my blog... I don't have any idea what that could possibly entail or how I might have inspired you but I'm sure I will now be wracking my brain coming up with my own ideas! And yes, regarding your other work as I said I'm afraid I can relate one hundred percent to where you're coming from, and can only hope that it will be behind you soon enough... from the sounds of things you and I seem to have similar methods of working and I don't doubt you'll be able to get everything done to your satisfaction, even if it will be a difficult crunch. I know I'm looking forward to seeing your next pony piece whenever you get around to finishing it.
And oh yes, actually that would be lovely... I'm sure scratches are always appreciated. ^.^ Dear sweet puppy...
@TapeDiggity
Well of course I remember you dear, busy person though I am. You always (or maybe it was only once, but I distinctly remember it) tell me to "stay classy" in your comments and it's a parting phrase I've always been immensely fond of. It would be terrible of me if I forgot either that or you.
That provided, allow me to say that I am extremely touched and flattered that you would think of me at all. It really is very kind of you, 'digital cash that you don't need' or no. While I appreciate the gesture, I don't know that I could in clear conscience accept it without offering you anything in return, and indeed I have to wonder if you might not be interested in a small commission instead? Or something, at least. If you like you can email me at fabulous.gaijin@yahoo.com and we can discuss the matter further there, but again allow me to repeat that I very much appreciate the thought alone and your humbling generosity.
@SharkMachine
Good afternoon! I was just thinking that your name looked familiar when I realized you were the same person who recently asked me about a higher resolution of my 'Rarity wearing Applejack's hat' picture, and then by some completely odd coincidence I saw that my blog had been linked by a FiM wallpaper site, and whose name was on the latter but your own! Very strange, but very happy coincidence!
So now I have a question for you, and I can only hope you won't mind my asking. As I said to some of the other posters above I do not currently have a suitable place to upload the original 2560x1600 version of this piece, though I am more than happy to send it to anyone if they do not mind contacting me by email. If you would not mind doing that, or else providing me with an email at which I could contact you (would the one at "My Little Wallpaper" be suitable?) I will happily send you the original size, as well as some larger versions of all three pieces of mine you currently have on the site. I didn't realize, ridiculous as it probably sounds, that Blogger had shrunk down all of my larger pieces until I posted this TRON commission the other night, which is why I told you I regrettably did not have a larger version of my other fanart you were interested in (haha turns out I do~). So, yes if this is not something you'd mind doing, I'm more than happy to offer them to you.
Well, of course you love Amadeus... you've proven to be a woman of exquisite taste and refinement, after all. (When you're not chugging Bailey's straight from the bottle, that is. But we all have our weak moments.) Even though I typo-ed his name last post, Salieri is one of the all-time great villains. One of the ideas for those fanfics that I will never get around to writing was a take-off of Amadeus, in fact... Where one of the unicorns conducting Twilight's entrance exam had spent his life studying prophecies and researching the Elements of Harmony and was sure he was going to be the one to deal with the return of Nightmare Moon and end up the national hero, beloved by an eternally grateful Celestia. Needless to say he doesn't take well to the prodigy who falls into Celestia's lap, and ends up purposefully driving the little fillie into becoming a neurotic recluse, prone to panic attacks and mental breakdowns over her need to live up to what Celestia expects of her. It would be fun to write someone that deliciously nasty, I think. Provided the fandom didn't come after me with torches and pitchforks for being so mean to Twilight.
I am one last rough concept away from reaching the end of this hell week, although I have to start work on the final art based on these concepts this weekend, so it's kind of a hollow victory. Still, it's somewhat liberating. I think I'll probably get that pony drawing done this weekend after all.
The pup was quite grateful, as predicted. She leaned heavily into the scratching, to the point where she would have flopped over had I pulled my hand away. As amusing as that might have been, I figured it wasn't in the spirit of your intended well-wishes, so I'll save that for another time.
@Harwick
I told you, I went to pour myself a glass and there were only a few drops left! It would have been an unforgivable crime to waste any of that dulcet delight, what else was I supposed to do?!
*aherm* Anyhow though, yes, Amadeus. A most excellent film and one that I am not at all surprised to hear you are a fan of, considering that you are a fellow artiste of fabulous tastes (and worry none about typos; I misspelled "soothe" myself last night. In our own defense however we are both busy people who could arguably use more sleep). It really is a shame that you likely will not ever get around to writing that fanfiction because I'd love to read it, and indeed I can only hope you might not wholly abandon the idea though I know how the realities of life often interfere with the best-laid plans of mice (equines?) and men. The fandom seems to wholeheartedly embrace the notion of neurotic Twilight anyway, and myself included.
I have complete faith in you that you will manage to get everything done in a timely manner, Harwick dear, and again I only look forward to your newest pony-art with bated breath. ^.^ I am also glad the scratches were thoroughly enjoyed; it's only a shame I can't pet the dear pup in person though I'm sure she is more than happy to have the greetings passed on by you. One of these days you'll have to share a picture of her with me, if you wouldn't mind doing so.
@WhiteDiamonds
Wow! I'm actually surprised you remember me ^^; (actually this makes this a bit awkward) Anywho!
I'm glad that you're getting all this well deserved attention. And also that you're still chugging along with more pony art. I always anticipate what the next will be ^^
I -will- make it up to you~ you shall hear from me (via email) soon ^^
@WhiteDiamonds
@Harwick
You two are too much - I keep finding new reasons to adore both of you; now it's shared appreciation for a great film. Back when I was young, studying music (having not yet dedicated my career to the boring art of law), it so happened that I met Mr. Tom Hulce, who portrayed Mozart in Amadeus. I was at the North Carolina School of the Arts for the summer, and as it is his alma mater, he was there to talk to the theater students when I ran into him. A few of my friends recognized him, and he was cornered. He was very funny, and humble about his role in the film and his work in general. I believe he told me something inspirational, which I've long since forgotten.
At any rate, it's a fantastic movie, and one of my all time favorites. Sometimes I feel like I am one of the poor souls who, like Salieri, fears mediocrity while recognizing that it is something from which I likely cannot escape! Thankfully, unlike Salieri, I am not close enough to great talents to actually be jealous of them - I merely marvel at a safe distance.
Speaking of geniuses, should you, Ms. White Diamonds, and you Harwick chose to collaborate, I would expect nothing less than the Mona Lisa of fanart. In the meantime, I'll continue to look forward to your next individual creations.
@WhiteDiamonds
Good morning.
That site is one of the reasons I asked for higher resolution versions. The other reason obviously being my own desktop.
It would be delightful if you sent the larger versions to my e-mail (and yes, the e-mail address on the site suits fine). I'd also like to host them on the site, with a link to your blog, if that is fine with you.
@zhoomcar
I had noticed that as well, but I forgot to mention it; Dash's color is just the right blue, and Pinkie's wings are just the right orange to match the eponymous Portals. Your comment also makes me realise that the ponies are the only sources of color in the otherwise black and blue city and space. Which makes me wonder, does the city look the same on the inside, full of ponies to color it? Wouldn't that be a sort of (un)natural beauty; the only thing that puts color in any given area is life?
@Kateasaurus
"I swear, I'm being stalked by someone stealing my personal interests and commissioning you for artwork."
I relate to this. Not only does WhiteDiamonds have the best tastes, but so do her fans.
So, let's see; you're a working scientist that likes Tron, Star Wars, and most of all, ponies? You're never going to have to worry about staying single any longer than you'd want to be...
I also find your potential replication of the WhiteDiamonds-designed outfit to be very interesting. After drawings and stories, is this the third way that she has inspired a person? Consider me among those that would like to see it when and if it's done. (It's times like these that I wish I would let myself use exclaimation points...)
@Harwick
Given how extremely themed ponies are, they have a lot of possibilities for thematic crossovers. Apparently, I wasn't the only one that thought to cross them over with such a thing. Maybe I'll try it with Tron later on. After all, I want to see what it looks like inside that city. I was actually in Hollywood Studios (I liked the name "MGM Studios" more) at the time that it was coming out (Before you raise an eyebrow, it was a business vacation to Orlando that our wealthy friend mostly paid for), so we saw a lot of promotions for it. Like most everyone else here, I thought that it looked interesting in design, though admittedly something put me off about that Photo Finish girl. I don't know if my family watched it, but I don't really ever watch movies. But I would if I was to draw fanart of it. Maybe I have too much time compared to you professionals, and I don't consider how much of an investment that would be.
@CaineScroll
While I would otherwise suggest that you listen to Smile, Smile, Smile again, I have to admit that I know what you mean by emotion aiding your ability to project such emotion in what you make. Of course I can't give an example for artwork as it's so new to me, but I did have that experience in my time when I was practicing composing (a bold thing to mention after all this talk of Chopin and Mozart). It's a form of expression. When you know what the notes feel like inside you, it comes more naturally as you try to emulate them in your chosen art form. I'm not sure that I should suggest that you start drawing sad ponies, though, since it might just make you feel worse. I guess that's up to you to decide based on how you tend to react to those things.
And really, your reception has been bad? By who; your friends, other real-life people, or just users from the internet? I can very much understand why that would discourage you from sharing it, but do keep in mind that we all have different tastes and varying standards for all aspects of a picture. I'm sure that we wouldn't be as hard on you, as we see you more as a constant learner with great potential than a well-established producer. But it's up to you.
@AtomicGreymon
Ah yes, the feeling that if you don't do something, then no one will. I know it well. It has been the reason for many things that I have persued in the past. WhiteDiamonds is proving to be a very versitile artist. I figure that if she can do this, she can do anything. I'm glad that you decided to task her with it, as of course I am quite impressed with the result. I didn't think that she would ever make something like this, and it seems that she never would have if not for your request.
@WhiteDiamonds
Much of my appreciation of it is likely derived from personal interest, but all old remembrances aside, this will be one of the artworks that I will look at if I ever doubt my decision to persue it. I actually like how dark it is. As I have mentioned before, I have minor light sensitivity, so moonlit areas like that previous commission seem more like something that I could enjoy to its fullest. I can imagine myself flying through space, chasing Pinkieflies. I don't mean to give you the wrong idea; it isn't like I'm an especially big fan of all science fiction (I have never watched Star Trek, but to be honest it looks boring to me), and in fact I don't really ever watch movies at all. As you may have guessed, I have never heard of Amadeus, but it sounds like something that I should remember to see. I really could use some more class.
On the subject of you possibly making a DeviantArt account, to be honest, the thought of you doing it makes me feel uneasy. Your responses are worth as much as the art itself. Every comment you make is a work of art. It would be okay as long as you don't let it take attention away from your blog. Unless, um, you want to, that is...
You and Harwick...collaborating? I can't say that the thought hasn't crossed my mind before, but you're both so busy that I never thought it would be a possibility for you. If we had the community's two greatest artists combining their skills into one project, the resulting masterpiece would inevitably be the greatest Pony fanart all years. If I were you, I would make sure that you both work on what you consider to be your specialties. WhiteDiamonds would make sure that the characters have personality, Harwick would do the textures and make the background, and so on. I know that you probably won't find the time to do it, but just the thought of it is exciting. It makes me wish that we had more beginner artists (at least a single one would be nice) so that I could do it too. Maybe two partners can learn from eachother. It would be like major and minor league art collaboration. Whatever happens, it's going to be interesting.
Man, that is one Heck of a lot of effort just to deliver some cupcakes to Luna. They could have just waited for moonset and delivered them on the ground. Rainbow Dash is discovering that when you green light the creation of Space Pinkie, you reap what you sow.
You do at least as good a Pinkie as you do Rarity. The poses and expressions are joyful and carefree.
@WhiteDiamonds I just thought it would be absolutely fabulous to make the outfit. I really do adore your drawing! Now if only I can find the perfect fabric for it! My fabric store has been plagued with the elderly lately (lots of sales going on!), so it's been impossible to fight through the crowds. So hopefully I'll get in there soon to pick fabrics out!
@Anon You'd actually be surprised how often my hobbies and interests land me in the single pool. If I had a dollar for every time someone said I was too "intimidating" or got annoyed that I spend a lot of free time playing video games, I'd be rich.
(You should let yourself use exclamation points. I find them fun! :D )
@Sond
Awkward, not at all my friend! And of course I remember you! I realize I can have a mind like a sieve but this is generally only in regards to my own tasks and projects, since I'm frequently juggling so much at once, and when it comes to the matter of friends and acquaintances I believe I actually retain information quite well.
That having been said I certainly hope you don't feel as though you need to make anything up to me! Whatever sculptures you choose to do, and whenever you might get around to them is perfectly lovely by me (obviously, I can quite relate to such things), and again I'm only flattered you enjoy viewing my artwork at all. Thank you again for that interest!
@ponydoraprancypants
**blushes demurely** Considering how much I in turn respect and admire your person and work, any pledge of adoration is among the highest praise you could bestow on me, I assure you! Thank you very much my friend.
Lucky you to have had the opportunity to meet Mr. Tom Hulce, as he is indeed a very gifted actor and truly, Amadeus must be one of the best films of our time. Or in any case, one of my personal favorites as I've said. If I might offer my opinion, I like to think that you've managed to escape the clutches of mediocrity already, or if your current achievements are any indication, so no worries!
And well, I'll do my best to create something appropriately fabulous to hopefully compliment Harwick's work, I promise. It should be a lot of fun to be able to work closely with him on a project~ ^.^
@SharkMachine
Oh, yes absolutely it would be my pleasure. Obviously at this point we've already been in contact via email, but once again I must thank you sincerely for your interest in my work as well as for your willingness to host it on your site. ^_^ It's very much appreciated!
@Anon
"Photo Finish girl"?? Oh you are so funny my dear~ ^.^
Yes if you have not gathered so much, I am at least not a singularity in thinking that Amadeus was a most exceptional film! If you ever do get the chance to see it someday my dear I highly recommend it, and it won many Academy Awards as well if such a thing makes a difference to you (though I might guess not if you don't watch many movies). It's not exactly a 100% historically-accurate telling of Mozart's and Salieri's lives, but as one who has been a lifelong fan of classical music as well as rich cultural history and period films, I know I've always considered it a wonderful source of inspiration regardless.
And yes by the looks of things Harwick and I are going to be attempting a collaboration piece after all! Though I don't think either of us are yet sure about our subject matter or how we're going to approach dividing up the work... I imagine we'll work that out when we get to that point. Whatever the case may be it should be a fun experience! I appreciate your enthusiasm for the idea, and as far as deviantART goes please try not to worry too much... when and if I do create that account it's not like I will end up abandoning this blog as a result, not for any reason.
Oh and thank you for calling my (often lengthy, rambling) comments works of art. You're such a dear you know~
@Frankensteinbeck
Daaaaar-liing~! I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed my latest artwork; thank you so much for taking the time to leave me a lovely comment~! =^.^= It's quite kind of you to say that you like my Pinkie Pie stylings, but do you really feel she rivals my Rarities (I would have thought, considering how much I draw of my favorite fashion-pony that she might have become my strongest subject by default)? Well it's very kind of you to say in any case... I always have valued strong personalities and have done my best to flatter them accordingly with my work!
@Kateasaurus
I just find this entire prospect so incredibly exciting; I really am looking forward to seeing your handiwork very much! ^.^ It's quite flattering to think I was able to inspire you in such a way!
"Plagued with elderly ladies"... I really shouldn't have laughed at that though I think I know exactly what you mean. As far as fabric goes darling, if this was an actual functional rendering of the outfit we were talking about here I might suggest a nice medium-weight wool or a wool blend, but considering it's merely to adorn your pretty pony-plush I think just about anything could work... it all depends on what your eyes and fingertips are drawn to. ^_^~
Definitely let me know how it goes when the project starts coming together a little more, please, I'm really excited about it!
@WhiteDiamonds I can't tell you how many times I've been muscled out of the cutting station of my fabric store by entire quilting circles of women. They each have an entire BASKET full of fabrics to be cut, and I just do not have the patience to wait for my few measly yards I usually need. :P
It's one of those projects where I need to see all my fabric options in person. I'm most excited to make her fabulous top hat. ^_^ So I'll most definitely post pictures whenever I get the chance to make it.

Yeah she owns that pen
You can call her queen or the empress
Sketching everyday don’t care if it’s paid
Every drawing’s bound to impress
All her pages worn out
She’s got a mind bent on her industry
It's time to celebrate
We’re getting WhiteDiamond’s artistry
On a scale from one to ten

Who’s going to argue
Put it up, let's go

I've been sitting on these lyrics for a while, but my bleating cries for an instrumental from Mr.Ashcorp went unanswered.
No use sitting on them forever.
@Forderz
oh my god you win several hundred internets. And the award for best line goes to...
"Calls her okay work artistic vomit"
Because that gave me a good chuckle. And yes, Di is a queen/empress/princess, and this blog is her castle.
@Anon
Eponymous. Hehehe. And I never thought of it that way either. I kind of envy your ability to churn out such large responses to things, if only I could put so much thought into writing English / Literature essays at school...
@Kateasaurus
Oh goodness yes, those quilting guilds... I know how those ladies can be as I once worked with one of them and I honestly believe she had more fabric swatches in her home than most retail establishments (said elderly lady was a bit on the eccentric side though, and actually owned her own wheel for spinning yarn as well as a massive tractor-sized loom, and all for a casual hobby though she was wealthy enough to afford it. I used to go over for afternoon visits and we would watch Quentin Tarantino films while carding wool). Your example is probably the biggest reason I have never consented to apply at a fabric store yet, and despite the fact I would love to have the employee discount.
But anyhow yes, as I think I mentioned to you once before that's exactly the reason I prefer not to shop for fabrics online or through catalogs if I can help it, because I think it's critically important to be able to hold them, touch them, evaluate their weight and texture and of course, see them with your own eyes because photos can never do textiles proper justice. That having been said, I do believe my levels of excitement have now doubled simply at the thought of you recreating her hat, and I can only imagine how I'm going to react once I get to see the real thing!
@Forderz
@zhoomcar
.....Okay, I don't even know how to begin to respond to this..! **crushes with virtual hugs** WHY are all of my lovely friends and followers so incredibly fabulous?! Is it because this blog and my tastes are largely Rarity-centric, and thus many of you are Rarity fans who likewise possess her generosity and talent in spades?? I don't even know what it is, but I don't think I've ever felt so warm and fuzzy in my life as I have these past several weeks and I must thank all of you profusely again! <3
@Forderz
Forderz my dear, you truly are an immensely talented young man as well as an exceedingly thoughtful one, and thank you so much for writing that for me~! =^.^= I couldn't stop smiling the entire time I was reading it! It will now be printed out and tacked up on my inspiration board, and I can guarantee you it will brighten my mood on a daily basis... really, thank you darling~ <3
@zhoomcar
You too, you fabulously sweet thing you! You're all just so incredibly nice. Thank you for bestowing the royal title on me once again, but I can guarantee you this "castle" wouldn't be worth living in if I didn't have all of you to share it with. ^_~
@Harwick
Harwick dear, where have you go-ooone~? And yes, for anyone who did not already see it today on EqD's Drawfriend, Harwick finished his latest artwork and it made the top spot once again! All of you should go and marvel at the beauty that is his latest pony masterpiece! Congratulations again my friend, you truly do deserve it. ^.^
Mwee, I love everyone here right now, I really do. Hugs hugs, squish squish~! <3
@WhiteDiamonds
Ah yes, I also wanted to make a point to let you all know that all of my larger fanarts which were automatically shrunk down to a smaller size by Blogger can now be viewed and downloaded in their original size at My Little Wallpaper, courtesy of SharkMachine (thank you very much, my friend!). I have updated my above blog post accordingly as well as added a link to my sidebar for greater accessibility. Thank you everyone who has displayed such interest in my artwork~!
@WhiteDiamonds I know an equally eccentric lady like that as well. (Thanks to her I have my embroidery machine). She has her guest house set up as her crafting place. Yes, and entire HOUSE. (It's bigger than my house, and you should see her actual main house. Yeesh.) I feel bad for the employees who work on days like that. They always have a look of panic on their faces!
@WhiteDiamonds
Yes, sorry... last night I had posted replies to everyone who had directed a comment at me. Unfortunately, I did so under the influence of a pounding headache and some cold medication. Reviewing it after the fact, I realized that I had rambled on for quite long without ever saying anything of substance at all... and knowing that some feel the obligation to respond to everything out of common courtesy, I figured that was abusing their good nature a bit too much and deleted the post. From what I can recall of it, the deepest bits were musings on Tom Hulce's dual stardom from "Amadeus" and "Animal House", so you really didn't miss much.
And thank you for your kind words both here and in the Drawfriend! You're being overly generous to promote me on your own blog.
@WhiteDiamonds
:D I'm glad you liked it!
I've been spending some of my free time "exploring" various second-hand shops for a frame worthy to contain that steampunk Rarity, and so far it's been slim pickings. I think there was a city-wide 50% sale on frames or something, because there are absolutely no metal frames in Winnipeg. Not even pseudo-metal!
I might have to splurge and buy new...
Awesome!
I love the colors and facial expressions.
@Kateasaurus
Yes, I do remember when you got that machine! That certainly was very kind of your benefactor. My friend that I mentioned had one of those as well, in addition to about twelve different sewing machines and some of which cost thousands of dollars apiece (as I said she wasn't wanting for money to spend on her casual hobby, and yes it took up a good portion of her moderately-sized home as well). They were definitely nice but as with my tablet, sweet and simple has always worked for me and I don't know if I could ever justify wanting to replace my Bernadette... she and I have just been through so much together after all!
While I've never been gifted an embroidery machine, said older lady was kind enough to present me with an authentic silk Japanese kimono years ago (complete with obi), as a birthday gift. And needless to say I was exceptionally grateful!
@Harwick
Oh, dear, well I do hope you're feeling better by now my friend... I'm partial to headaches myself and so I'm afraid I can empathize. And I do believe I'm the only person here who makes it a point to respond to every single comment directed my way, though I suppose it was a well-meaning gesture regardless.
And oh, think nothing of it as I have already said! Artwork like yours deserves respect and admiration, and it's truly my pleasure to help it achieve that if I can. ^.^
@Forderz
I absolutely loved it, and thank you so very much again for doing that for me! You're so incredibly thoughtful. ^.^ As far as frames go, I'm sorry you've been having such bad luck finding something appropriate but might I suggest the alternative of purchasing a secondhand wooden frame and giving it a faux metal finish yourself (as in, metallic paint)? It's a thought anyway, dear!
@Miris
Thank you, thank you so much! While the facial expressions were suggested to me, as well as the colors to an extent I did have plenty of room in which to play around, and found the project to be a very fun challenge overall. I'm so glad to hear you enjoy the end result! ^.^
@Harwick
Oh and by the way, Harwick dear, I FINALLY remembered to go and comment on your own blog (like, three weeks later), only to find that I seemingly have the same problem that I do with Katie's: I'm not able to reply at all! I seriously don't know WHAT it is or why I'm able to comment on EqD and CaineScroll's blog with no apparent problem, but the comment boxes on both of your respective pages simply refuse to bring up my account when I try to post. It's really incredibly frustrating!
I'm sorry... ;_;
@WhiteDiamonds
I apologize for my blog's mistreatment of you, and any frustration it might have caused. Aside from Blogger being Blogger, I have no explanation for it.
On the bright side, it really wasn't reverse psychology when I told people not to follow that blog. My main problem with my Deviant Art account is that I feel like I can't post things on a whim there for fear of wasting the time and disappointing the expectations of the people who follow that one. I created the blogger page just to be able to post things that I could then link to from elsewhere, such as that pony created through the facebook app, or that pony personality chart thing we discussed earlier. If it suddenly had a bunch of followers, then there'd be pressure to apply quality control when posting there as well, and I'd have to hunt up a new place to post random things.
As I said before, if there's ever anything there that people here might find interesting, I'll drop a link to it. I suppose your visit did allow you to see the kind of chicken scratches you might have to put up with if we ever figure out how to approach a collaborative project. (See there? If I didn't butcher the HTML, then there's no reason for anyone to have to visit the blog itself.)
Because I'm surprised no-one else has posted this yet (Hi Scrolls!) Scrolls posted up his first commission over yonder. Go check it out!
Hooray plugging!
@zhoomcar
@zhoomcar
Since the illustrious Ms. WhiteDiamonds' blogspot page appears to be an unofficial hub for this most excellent group of graphic artists, and with most sincere apologies to her for "threadjacking," I'd like to share my appreciation for Scrolls' and Harwick's latest pieces.
Scrolls: What a lovely Applejack scene you imagined for your first commission. For a self-described novice, I think your painting skills are astoundingly good. As others noted, the wood grain details in your bucket are phenomenal, and I love the twisted, gnarled trunk of the cherry tree.
Harwick: I loved your Derpetto/Dinkinocchio scene. My goodness, what detail! It must have taken so much work to draw all that rope, and I am awestruck by how much thought you put into designing Dinky's body, the texture and grain of the wood, and the light reflecting on her. The whole piece is simply dazzling!
You are both marvelous artists, and so is the fabulous host of this site, whose graciousness and forgiveness I beg for posting on topics unrelated to her own beautiful work.
(I deleted the previous comment due to an unfortunate typographical error).
@Harwick
Oh there's no need to apologize my friend, truly... it's not like you had anything to do with it and I know that. I'm only sorry that I seemingly won't be able to comment on your blog as well, because it's already unfortunate enough about Katie's...
You really are so silly. I hardly think your "chicken scratches" are of any less quality than my own doodles, and in fact if I'm being honest I think they put them to shame (I mean, have you ever even looked at that sketchdump blog post I made at everyone's repeated requests, against what might have been my better judgment? Most of them are absolutely dreadful to look at). And yet for whatever reason, people seem to enjoy looking at those when I share them. I can't imagine yours would be any different, and honestly I think people would welcome seeing them on your deviantART page (if nothing else, you could upload them to your Scraps gallery), as they might be somewhat less intimidating for any fans of yours aspiring to achieve your level of talent someday. But of course, that's only my own opinion and I hope you'll only do what you find comfortable.
@zhoomcar
Yes, I had received notification of it but it's nice of you to think of other followers of mine who might not, I suppose... thank you dear.
@PonydoraPrancypants
Oh, ah, yes, it's quite alright... if nothing else I at least hope I can be of service to my fellow artists. And after all I was the one who made a point to draw attention to Harwick's recent work so I can hardly complain, right? In any case thank you once again for your immensely kind words and praise, my friend, though I really don't know how much I deserve any of it.
I still feel badly about posting about others' work, so I'll make it up to you with an original just-for-you contribution of my own - never to appear elsewhere - prose. And now: Rarijack!
Applesack and Charity came from two different worlds. Wait, that’s not right … ok, here we go.
“Old Fashioned” by P. Prancypants
Rarity rested her head on a forehoof and stared vacantly into her drink. The Golden Horseshoe was not the type of drinking establishment to feature a cocktail list or a small plates menu, and Rarity was sure the barmare had never heard the term “mixology” in her life. Yet here Rarity sat, alone at the bar on a Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Horseshoe had lured her inside for two reasons: it was the first public house she had seen upon exiting the Canterlot Exposition Center, and there was nopony inside likely to harangue her about fashion and fabric. After two full days of nothing but shop talk at the annual Fabric and Fashion Forum, Rarity would scream if she heard one more mention of chambray, charmeuse, or chenille. Even she had her limits. If the questionable bar didn’t foil her fellow fashionistas from finding her, then the oversized dull gray coat and plain hat she wore surely would. Rarity listened as the creaky front door opened and then swung closed with a dull thud, and another pony clip-clopped on the dusty hardwood floor over to the bar.
“What’ll it be?” the barmare asked the newcomer, who took the barstool next to Rarity.
“Jest a pint of whatever lager y’all got on tap, if ya please.”
Rarity’s eyes widened in recognition of the unmistakable voice of her friend. She threw back her hat and pulled herself upright.
“Applejack! Whatever are you doing here in Canterlot?”
“Whoa Nelly!” Applejack nearly fell from her stool. “S’that really you, Sugarcube?” She peered at Rarity with a critical eye. “It is you!”
“Of course it is, I’m here for the fashion exposition.”
“Well, Ah’m here for the Feed ‘n Seed show. Y’all must be on the other side of the Expo Center. Ah was wonderin’ why all them fancy ponies were prancin’ around while we were comparin’ fertilizers. So what in the hay are ya doin’ in a dive like this?” Applejack quickly turned to the barmare. “No offense.” She shrugged, and set Applejack’s brew onto the bar.
“Oh Applejack, I just couldn’t take it anymore. For the first two days it was fabulous to be around all the other glamorous designers from all around Equestria, but I’m frankly sick and tired of debating which trends are going to stick next season.” Besides, it’s giant hats, Rarity thought to herself. It’s always giant hats. “What about you, shouldn’t you be testing new varieties of apple or evaluating the new plows?”
“Nah,” Applejack replied. “Big Mac can handle it. He’s better’n Ah’ll ever be at dealin’ with all them gabby salesponies.”
“Of … course,” Rarity replied, imaging how frustrating Applejack’s taciturn brother would be to anypony making a pitch.
“Say, what’re you drinkin’ there? Looks mighty complicated,” Applejack asked. “That a lemon peel?”
“Oh this?” Rarity replied, looking down at her nearly untouched drink. “It’s nothing fancy, just an Old Fashioned.”
“A what now?”
“An Old Fashioned. It’s a very old recipe. Whiskey, a white sugarcube, a dash of orange bitters, a twist of lemon peel, and a cherry. I very much like the way the flavors layer together.”
“Ah don’t know, whiskey’s plenty good all on its own,” Applejack replied, dubiously.
“Oh, well, that’s true,” Rarity began. “But you see, here we take a basic spirit, and we give it a bit of something sweet, a dash of something herbaceous and refreshing, and a hint of citrus to accent and amplify. Unexpected combinations like that are so often more than the sum of the parts.” She lifted her tumbler and sipped the cocktail. “Do you care to try it?”
“Why not?”
Rarity magically levitated the glass toward her friend, who tilted it back and took a cautious swallow.
“Well,” Applejack said after a long moment. “If that ain’t a mighty fine tipple you found there!” She tipped the brim of her hat down and then up to show respect.
“Finish your beer and drink one with me,” Rarity invited. “Don’t make me go back to the Exposition!”
“Ah reckon I’ll do that,” Applejack replied.
Rarity enjoyed herself greatly, as both she and Applejack were natural raconteurs with respect to their own worlds. The earth pony matched her story for story as they told of the silliness they had witnesses at their respective trade shows. She barely noticed as the bar filled with patrons around them.
“Say, Rarity, it’s gettin’ late, but Ah want to let you know what a great time Ah had. And thanks for showin’ me this here drink. It’s … good to be reminded once in a while how good completely different tastes, like sugar and bitter, can be together. Ah think Ah may have a new favorite … drink.”
“Oh,” Rarity said, glancing at the clock above the bar. It was late. “yes. Well, Applejack, I’m so delighted that you found me here. It was a splendid way to pass the time.”
“Ya know, I used ta think you were so different that we’d never get along, but now I know that we’re a good team,” said Applejack. Rarity looked down and saw with surprise that Applejack had twice as many empty glasses in front of her as she did. “You know, you and I are kinda like this here drink,” Applejack continued. “You can have plain white sugar, and orange bitters, but only together …”
“Stop right there, Applejack,” Rarity said sternly, putting a hoof up to her friend’s mouth. Applejack frowned, but stopped talking.
“What was Ah sayin’, sugarcube?” Applejack asked with a puzzled look.
“Oh, just something about needing to get back to your hotel, I think,” Rarity said. “Come on, I’ll help you.”
Rarity paid the pair’s tab, and then steadied her friend with a hoof as they made their way out into the streets of the city and to the inn where Applejack had made her lodgings. The orange mare was half-asleep when Rarity turned her over to Big Macintosh. She then turned and began to walk back to her own lodgings, a bounce in her step and a secret smile on her face.
“We really are something,” she said. She resolved to restock her bar when she returned to Ponyville.
@PonydoraPrancypants
That scene was greatly entertaining, and not just because it clued me into the trend of giant hats (which, while I had never thought about much before, I had always kind of suspected anyway.) It was nice to see a practical application of the various discussions about ponies and alcoholic beverages, and a nice touch of classy RariJack to boot! Now if only it had included more about the latest trends in fertilizers...
Of course, this just continues the vicious circle, where I have now praised your work on White Diamond's blog and must therefore do something to make it up to her, and around and around we go. Oh, she'll insist that it's not necessary and that she's only too happy to draw attention to others, which will just reinforce the need to repay such a gracious host. On reflection, I suspect it may well be part of a diabolical plan of hers to lead to some kind of perpetual RariJack creation engine, powered by the posters of her blog.
Well played, Miss Diamonds. Well played.
@PonydoraPrancypants
Oh, my..!! The renowned Ponydora has seen fit to grace my humble little blog with original prose once again, and this time with what is a decidedly Rarijack snippet?! Meep..!! <3 <3
That was... well that was excellent, and I'm not going to lie I was bouncing up and down like a silly schoolgirl in my chair when I first began reading your post. Thank you SO very much for doing that for me, though I must say I feel bad if I caused you any unnecessary guilt, inadvertently or no. I confess I might not have been in the best spirits when I decided to tackle my replies last night and apparently it might have shown some... anyway it really is quite alright about the whole posting thing and I hope you don't feel I held it against you at all.
That having been said though yes, the gift was much appreciated and enjoyed, mweeheehee~ =^.^= "Feed 'n Seed show"... oh dear Goddess could that pony be any more adorable!? "Charmingly rustic" doesn't even begin to do her justice really, and I truly believe it's all I'd be able to do not to glomp her if I was ever able to meet her. And how incredibly clever are you, tying in one of our favorite subjects of mixology as a perfect metaphor for that relationship! Not that I would have expected anything less. "Unexpected combinations", indeed... well I have to say it sounds perfectly delicious to me. ^_~
Yes, I am a horrible shameless fangirl. I suppose I should be ashamed of myself, but I'm not really.
@Harwick
Oh, you! I'll have you know I do no such thing! Or well, not consciously anyhow... *ahem* But in any case no, I'm perfectly content to entertain myself with my own Rarijack creations (expect another one in the very near future by the way; you've been warned!) and I neither expected nor arguably deserve such a generous gift from dear Ponydora. Though I can assure you I'll treasure it regardless~! <3
I'm actually quite fond of giant hats truth be told, hence the current avatar. Rarity of course is quite correct: some things never go out of style!
@PonydoraPrancypants
Man, now I feel bad for commenting on your deviantart page instead of here, if WD's blog is the defacto place to pile on heaps of ruthl-- I mean gently critique people's work.
You put me in that bar. Slightly smoky, the radio behind the bar intermittently bursting into static, a hard-eyed barmare cleaning a glass with a flithy rag as she eyes her customers...
And a farmer and a fashionista sitting front and centre, laughing about the ridiculousness of their respective lines of work.
/whipcrack now get back to Flight of the Alicorn!
@WhiteDiamonds Well it's good to know my blog's comment section isn't the ONLY one that's broken. Although I did just play around with my settings for the comment section, so hopefully that did something. If not, I don't know. I guess I'll just pout about it, and shake my fist at the computer.
Eh...you know you've been inactive when you have to scroll up nearly half the page to find anything addressed to you.
@WhiteDiamonds
"as one who has been a lifelong fan of classical music as well as rich cultural history and period films"
You might not believe me if I say so, but there was never a time in my life when I didn't like those things. Also, I actually do pay some attention to awards because if I'm going to watch anything at all, I should at least know what the critics thought of it. At your suggestion, I spent some of my spare night hours (which was part of the reason why it took me so long to make this) watching it online. (Why? Because...) What you say about it is true, and I quite enjoyed the soundtrack. All just classical, wherever you go. The way that some of the scenes played out was reminiscent of tragedy and comedy. I do think that in some ways they made Mozart a bit extreme (That giggle...), but I certainly can relate to being the jealous mediocrity. Sometimes, my mind reasons that if others are better, then I can be better. And if I can be better, I must improve. One thing that I noticed was how Mozart's wig reflected his situation in life. In the beginning, he wore a symbol of authority, presenting himself and receiving widespread praise. At his surface, he shows no sign of conflicts and any flaws that are apparent to us are not things that hold him back in any way. Later, once he takes the wig off and we see more of his personal life, we are shown his personal flaws and the problems that he faces when he is away from the watching crowd. It shows his true identity, and what eventually becomes his undoing that no one in the crowd of fans will understand because they have only ever seen him while he was metaphorically wearing the wig. I wonder now what other movies you and Harwick like.
I'm a bit tempted now to write my own lyrics devoted to you (it really isn't that hard, especially when you have something to base it on), but especially after watching the film, I would want to make the instrumentals to go with it. Instrumentals are easy, but I don't think we have anyone to lend their voice for the lyrics, and it has been long since I last touched the digital violins. In order to make fanart for you, we would have to depict you in some way. I guess we could use Rarity to symbolize you. I'm not good enough to create something worthy of it yet, but maybe in time I will be.
@Harwick
I know that you likely will not see this, but I want to commend you on your recent artwork. Derpy's appearance is probably the most emotional single expression we have seen from you. I don't often give you enough credit; you are consistently as great as even WhiteDiamonds'. There isn't really any other place that we can review them, so even if this is her blog, I think it works fine. With regards to the conspiracy theory...
@Anon
I did, in fact, see your compliments on that drawing, and thank you for them!
@Forderz
*GASP* Oh dear, I understand you're anxious to get more of Ponydora's most excellent writing but do try and show a little more respect..! Our esteemed guest is always welcome to idly pass time commenting (and writing mini-fanfictions) on my blog, and in fact I'll confess I remain most flattered by the thought, meehee~ =^.^;=
@Kateasaurus
Yes it seems you're not alone dearie! Most unfortunately. ;( I really don't know what the problem is but as I've said before I find it extremely frustrating, and not to mention terribly rude of Blogger to deny me the pleasure of commenting on my friends' posts if I want to! Boo~
It hadn't been working the last time I tried to reply to one of your entries (the one with Dexter) but I'll make an effort to give it another go sometime soon. And/or, as I said perhaps Blogger will be able to offer me some much-needed assistance at last.
@Anon
Oh there you are darling, I'd been wondering what happened to you! Not that I hadn't just assumed you were busy of course, but all the same it's a nice surprise.
So you did watch that movie did you! Well I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed it. ^.^ It really has been one of my favorites ever since the first time I saw it, when I was around fourteen I believe (it was in middle school, in music class). And yes you're right and it's a wonderful and often poignant blend of entertaining and tragic moments. While the story is arguably the best part of the film, I have always been in love with the rich, beautiful recreation of 18th century European life, and of course with the music since as I said I'm a huge fan of classical (actually, I own the soundtrack). And much of Mozart's work especially. While I agree that realistically speaking, they might have gone overboard with some of his quirks it's really hard to say, as to my understanding he actually is documented as being something of an eccentric individual (also, there seems to be an interesting amount of evidence which suggests he was a synesthete). So who knows. But again, I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed it and I found your insights about his wigs to be most interesting.
You're silly dear... there's certainly no need to write me any lyrical compositions (or mercy, instrumentals), nor to draw me any Rarity fanarts, though I very much appreciate the thought of course. These conversations are quite good enough for me, and while I appreciate other things people have done for me they always leave me feeling the slightest bit guilty as well and wanting to do something in return! No worries, truly.
