Back, Bearing Artwork

Greetings, dearest readers! Finally, at long last I have returned with a new artwork, and a commissioned one at that! As this is my very first piece of commissioned fanart, specifically, it goes without saying I am quite excited, yay~ ^.^

This artwork was done for a friend of mine from EqD, the very talented Pogosama. If you haven't heard of him or his music before than I certainly encourage you to check it out now; he does some fantastic work in a variety of genres, all with equal aptitude! He came to me wanting something with a specific jazz-inspired mood and starring none other than our favorite pony Rarity... I certainly hope I did it proper justice!

Originally I had imagined more of a flapper-type ensemble for Rarity in this piece but my vision called for something a little more pensive and elegant and less exuberant... a little more '30s Depression Era and less Roaring '20s I suppose. But yes. Looking at it now I realize this is the second fanart of Rarity with a martini I have drawn in the past several weeks, as well... hopefully that doesn't say anything about me. *ahem*

It is good to be back though! And with any luck I should have some more new pony arts to share very soon, even if they are just some happy doodles. Until then~!

No words...should have brought a poet...

XD Heehee... as I said, I am just overjoyed that you like her my friend; after all, I could hardly help but be inspired by that lovely music you sent me! Between that and your requests/suggestions, this picture practically drew itself!

Thank you so much again, I am... stoked, really. =^^=

This is just too amazing for words. :O

@Favo

You are definitely right about the background... I don't generally do much with them (opting instead for more ambiguous sky/cloud-type backgrounds or simple cop-out gradients) in my pony arts, or at least to date. But that's part of why I adamantly refer to them as doodles; I have yet to create or post a piece of FiM fanart that I can say I have fully applied myself to with every bit of my ability.

But in any case, thank you so much for the lovely words, my dear. ^_^ And for the information as well; I did very much like that cute little fanart of John Joseco's the other night!

@DJB123

Virtual hugs from me to you, dearest! I was hoping you would enjoy her, even if she is not strictly speaking a flapper-Rarity as I'd originally envisioned. But yes, thank you so much, it means a lot to me!

@BND

Oh dear, you flatter me. I don't know if it's that good, but thank you so very much for the kind sentiments..! =^_^=

Oh, no no no no no. You couldn't do Rarity as a flapper. I am so grateful that you chose a later period. The flapper look is about boyishness and androgyny. Doing that to Rarity would just be a crime! This 1940-ish look suits her much better, since Mae West brought femininity back good and hard by then. (Yes, you know most of this, but I have to defend my position!)

@Frankensteinbeck

I agree completely darling. Though flappers did introduce shorter hairstyles, heavier makeup and more of a French-inspired flair that continued to influence the fashions and popular trends of following decades (I'm sure you know all this as well). But yes, glad you approve!

@DJB123

Well for that, I am most grateful... there's no greater joy to an artist than to know their work has brought others happiness. Or at least that's how I personally feel about it. And hopefully, I will have more to share soon enough! ^_^

@Favo

You are always so sweet, thank you!

BND said... Reply to comment

Truly, you rank among one of the top artists I've seen WD. ^_^

Not to mention how it started the development of modern female underwear, but... oh Celestia, we have to stop before the internet explodes.

Kateasaurus said... Reply to comment

It's simply fantastic! I love how even on the window there's detail really setting the mood of the scene! Love love love.

@BND

Well that's rather a lofty pedestal to be placed upon! But thank you for the sentiments, it really is flattering. <=)

@Frankensteinbeck

That, or before I am unable to stop myself from launching into a full-blown rambling post about the evolution of women's fashions through the early 20th century, their lasting impact on our current trends today and why I personally adore the styles of that era and wish they'd make a return... actually, on second thought I guess that is pretty much the same thing as the internet exploding, isn't it?

@Kateasaurus

Thank you so much! I knew I wanted to factor a rainy evening into this piece from the get-go, and a window by a lonely table at a bar seemed the best way to do it. Thank you for the kind comments, I appreciate them! ^.^

I'm afraid so. I'd be all 'Look, I love the elegantly excessive modesty of the 10s and the glamour of the late 30s and understand that without the real sexual revolution of the roaring 20s and the backlash of prohibition we could never have made that jump, but the flapper look itself is a deliberate denial of the female form I detest even when the philosophy is made up as elegantly as in Japanese kimonos'.

But all of this would be missing the bigger picture. We appear to have only slightly different opinions on the same fascination. Also, there are ponies. I am experiencing a fecund and ebullient joy, and I thank you for this conversation.

@Frankensteinbeck

Not at all, the pleasure is all mine! And actually, you see, I quite agree with you; flapper fashions in regards to dress were all about creating angular lines and rejecting the curves that make the female form beautiful (beautiful in my opinion anyway, and to the extent of doing away with the old corsets that brought about the undergarment revolution you speak of), and as such I have never celebrated them with the fervor that our current society seems to. They were all about embracing the androgyny that has become the norm for so many women and girls in our modern society today, so sad. Give me the class, the elegance, and the decidedly fabulous effeminate fashions of the bygone glamour era, any day!

But anyhow... I do believe I hear the internet beginning to fracture at this point... *feminine brohoof to you*

Frankensteinbeck said... Reply to comment

@WhiteDiamonds
Well, I can't resist the undergarment part. I'm PRETTY sure I'm the informed layman to your expert on women's fashion history, but what I meant was that the flapper era killed corsets and replaced them with girdles to squeeze the hips and bust. Modern bras and panties are the end(?) product of a creeping evolution of girdles into smaller and less restrictive forms that replaced the centuries old loose bloomers and chemise.

WhiteDiamonds said... Reply to comment

@Frankensteinbeck

It was always my understanding that was the case for the women who did not naturally have such a shape (err, not curvaceous I mean)... they certainly pioneered new corsets to create the straight lines which were in vogue at the time, as opposed to the former variety which were meant to accentuate the hips and bust. But to my knowledge, the forerunner of the modern bra and panties also developed at this time, as well.

This truly is a stunning drawing; the lighting and color really evoke a melancholy atmosphere. I love what you've done with Rarity's mane, as well as the detail of one of her earrings matching her cutie mark. And I also enjoyed following the discussion on women's fashion in the '20s and '30s. :)

@jodyjm13

Oh, aheh yes, I tend to get carried away sometimes when a topic relevant to my interests comes up, you see. ^.^; But thank you so much my friend, I always appreciate your feedback! Getting to play around with Rarity's manestyle was one of my favorite perks to creating this period piece, actually, so I'm quite happy you noticed and enjoyed. ^.^ In addition to the other lovely bits of feedback of course.

Thank you!

The art and discussion thereof? It's like dinner and a movie! Do go on, I'm enjoying this.

Alas, gentlemen, as it seems my collocutor and I have arrived at common ground on the topic, the internet shall stay safe for now.

Though if anyone else were ever to wish to discuss some of the finer nuances of fashion trends, you know where to find me!

As soon as I saw this piece, my mind went to a scene in Titanic. The scene Rose is looking through Jack's portfolio and among the pictures of the naked women Rose comes to a picture of an elderly woman sitting at a bar. Jack tells her that he would see this woman every night. She wears all the jewelry she owns and her clothes have become moth eaten but she still comes to the bar looking for love.

Yeah this piece made me thing of that

WhiteDiamonds said... Reply to comment

@JaxsonJaguar

Oh, yes, I absolutely know the scene you are referring to. I was sixteen when that movie came out, you see, and my niece and I (she being only a couple years younger than myself, and us both being silly romance-obsessed teenagers) must have seen that movie six times in the theatres. I can't believe I'm admitting that here, but yes.

Now that you've reminded of that, I don't think I'll be able to look at this picture the same way again! That was a really sad story about that old lady, now that I think about it... ;_;

@Quirko Germont

Oh my goodness... this comment is so fabulous that I scarcely know what to say. Unfortunately I do not really speak Spanish at all, though I can understand it a little, so I went to your page and tried to read the story. And then of course I realized that you had already posted the translated version underneath. ^.^; That really was so beautifully done; I only wish I could read it in your native language as well, but as it is I very much enjoyed it. It's amazing to me that my simple fanart could inspire you in such a way but it's immensely flattering, thank you so much! I am so thrilled that you enjoyed this picture so much, and that it was able to give you such inspiration in turn... that's really the most wonderful thing any artist can ever hope for. =)

Thank you!

Oh, not a waste of my time... never darling. It really was beautifully done. Thank you so much again for making something so nice and for then sharing it with me; I appreciate that so much!

You really do have quite a lovely blog... though I can't understand very much of it, I enjoyed looking around. ^.^

Immaneuel_Kanter made a comment on reddit about using an old-timey voice to go along with your image, so I ponied up: http://edwardprox.dyndns.org/InASpeakeasyMood.ogg

Just thought you'd like to hear it :)

Is it okay if I use this piece of art in the video for a song I'm making? It's a jazz rendition of Art of the Dress

WhiteDiamonds said... Reply to comment

@Marshall

OH!! Dear Goddess, I can't believe I ever missed this post before, and don't know how I did that but I am SO incredibly sorry, please forgive me for that oversight! I really pride myself on getting back to all of my comments too, or at least to the best of my ability, and especially concerning such lovely and thoughtful things as this... anyway my apologies again. Though I doubt you'll even see this reply now, I did try to listen to it, but unfortunately can't seem to get the link to work for me... =( I really am sorry about that but thank you sincerely for trying to share it with me, anyway!

@PsychedelicBrony

Good evening, and sorry for making you wait a few days for a response (though it's better than what I did to that poor dear above you, of course). In answer to your question, and while I will say I personally am flattered by the thought I'm afraid I can't grant you the permission, seeing as how it was a commissioned artwork as I stated in my initial post and as such, is now the property of my client Pogosama. He paid for it and it was made specifically for him (and for a song he also was working on), so you'll have to contact him and ask him if you'd like to use it... I provided a link to his YouTube account in my description of the artwork above.

I must thank you for the interest in any case, as well as for being so polite to ask. As I said, I personally am quite flattered by the thought.
